BWCAW Permits 2022
Boundary waters permits for 2022 will start being reserved on January 26th, 2022 at 9 AM. We reserve permits for most of our guests but you are welcome to reserve your own too. It’s not a complicated process and can be done at https://www.recreation.gov/permits/233396
Or just give a call and we’ll get it set for you.
While permit reservations open in January that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get a permit later. It’s always worth a phone call or email to check if there are permits open for the dates you’d like to paddle and explore. You can also see if there are permits open once the system is up and running at the end of January. There are often some really great entry points open even at the last minute. https://www.recreation.gov/permits/233396
A couple things about permits to remember:
- A BWCAW permit is for a group of up to nine people. Party size does not matter to reserve a permit. Even if you have people not yet committed you can still reserve a permit. Actual party size is changed when you arrive and the permit is issued. You only need one permit for a group of up to nine travelling and camping together.
- Permits are to enter the BWCAW on a SPECIFIC day at a specific entry point – you can stay as long as you want after the entry day. You can only enter the BWCAW at the entry point listed on your permit.
- After your entry you can travel and camp wherever you want in the BWCAW
- Group leaders and listed alternates are the only people who can pick up that permit. It’s a good idea to have one or two alternates listed in case the trip leader can’t make the trip.
- As always you will be required to see the three BWCAW rules and education videos and take a test when we issue your permit.
We issue permits and rent equipment for any Gunflint Trail entry point.
