BWCAW Permit News 7/22/26

July 22, 2026

BWCAW cooperators had a meeting with the USFS late yesterday. The fires have slowed some, the weather has been favorable though still windy. There are large fires north and west of us – still nothing anywhere near us here at HJO. Smoke has been very light to nothing in the last 48 hours. Of course that can change and there is no good way to predict or forecast smoke from fires that range from 20 to 200 miles away. All that said, things are looking good for paddlers.

Here is the official word:

The Forest Service is currently assessing Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness quota permits for Saturday, there is a lot to consider in health and human safety, as well as wildfire activity, weather, and resources available.  Stay tuned for an update Thursday.

That’s what we know and allowed to say. Good news? Maybe. We’ll know tomorrow.
