Entry points near us open starting 7/30

The USFS has determined it is safe to enter the BWCAW for day use as of today – Monday July 27. We’ve sent out several groups already today! AND more importantly the USFS is expected to announce that overnight permits will be valid and usable starting Thursday July 30th. As the formal announcement has not come out we cannot say this is 100% but it’s looking like a high probability. When that order comes out, we will be contacting folks who have permits for dates July 30 through August 3rd to let them know. All permits after that should remain valid too.

The areas opened up are from the Missing Link entry pt 51 and to the East ove rthe rest of the Gunflint Trail. Many entries on the South Side of the BWCAW are also opening up in the Tofte Ranger district, Southern Kawishiw and Sawbill area.

Many people have called and emailed having seen incorrect or incomplete information about the Boundary waters being closed for the season. That is not correct. It’s a USFS legalese semantics thing. There was a very specific time during which the BWCAW has been closed but that should end July 29th.

All the permits from July 30th going forward in our queue are still listed as valid and usable.

There is no smoke in the air here at this time. We have received several rainfalls in the last few days so fire danger is currently low. There is still a total fire ban for the entire region so plan to use a stove for all your cooking and be sure you have enough fuel for your trip.

Blueberries are pletiful this year and there are even some great mushrooms popping up too. It’s a great time to be in the woods.
